Sorrow

Pulling into the driveway after today made coming home feel different. I peer at Delaney who has her head pressed against the window and her eyes closed, exhausted from our day. I run my fingers gently over her face and she sighs softly, leaning into the touch. “We’re home,” I say softly.

She blinks open her eyes and stares at the house before turning to me. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“That’s okay. You had an eventful day. It’s to be expected. Let’s get inside and order some dinner and get the dogs settled.” She yawns and nods before climbing out of the truck. I grab the leashes glad that I paid extra for flea treatment and baths before we left. I unlocked the door and saw Sam sitting on the sofa scrolling through his phone.

He looks up and stands. “Hey. You must be Delaney,” he says with an easy smile.

“Delaney, this is Sam. One of the co-owners of S Security.”

Delaney holds out a hand and shakes his. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“You as well. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Delaney laughs and says, “Good things I hope.”

Sam nods, replying, “Of course. I heard you’re a hard ass when it comes to therapy though.”

She snorts and takes the leashes from my hands. “Only when Sorrow decided he wants to play Fort Knox when it comes to his secrets and talking. Or when he wants to be stubborn about my crafts.” She sniffs delicately.

“Glitter gets everywhere,” I say, shrugging. Sam stares at me with amusement.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever you say. I’m going to go let the dogs out. It was great meeting you, Sam,” Delaney said and made her way to the backdoor.

“You too,” he calls back, waiting for her to be out of the room before he turns to me. “She’s good for you,” he states, motioning me towards the kitchen.

I follow and move to the fridge pulling out two beers. Handing one to Sam I twist off the top of mine. “Did you find anything on the camera?” I ask.

Sam looks behind him and pulls out a piece of paper with a name scrawled on it, and gives it to Sorrow. “Who the hell is Kevin Jones?”

“Maybe you should ask your girl. She might know more than she realizes,” Sam replies.

I take a long drink from my beer looking at the paper. “Hell, Sam.”

He clapped me on the shoulder tilting his chin to the pantry, “Dog stuff is in there. Food, beds, a few toys, new collars, everything you may need. I’ll see you tomorrow at the office?”

I nod absentmindedly and wait until he leaves the house. I brace my arms on the counter and take in several breaths, trying to calm my mind. “The dogs are down in the laundry room for the night. I hope you don’t mind, I turned on the fireplace, I got a little cold.”

“No. That’s fine,” I say, turning to her.

She tilts her head and looks at me. “Are you all right?”

I take another swig of beer and nod.
